pretty tough, most educational specialists that I know have very little common sense. Guess it comes from too much academia, and too little experience. You should find a subject that interests you, then devote some effort in that direction.
Dont forget… Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach.

I have two sons in this field. They are highly experienced and both have 2 year degrees in the field. They are not well paid but really enjoy their work. They both say that experience counts for more than degrees in this field, but I'm thinking that for him to get started in the field, he should have at least a 2 year degree and as many certifications as he can get. If he takes some classes in this field, he will hear about the certification tests and when and where he can take them. They are sometimes expensive, but his teachers should be able to guide him toward the most important ones.

There are many social agencies that work with children. You could work as an administrator for one of them.

An admin assistant will need an entirely different skill set. Depending on the company it might just be a receptionist job. Others will be expected to be experts in Word and other programs. Try talking to a temp agency and see what they are looking for.

Depending what you call “serving the community”. If you want to become a social worker, your advanced degree should include social work and/or psychology, and you could integrate with the social services in your area.

If serving your community means working with the local government, i.e. politics – you might want to first have a taste of what it’s like to work in this environment – it is very different than education and involves a lot of hot air.

To avoid disillusion, try and volunteer in the offices of the party you support, and pursue an admin job to begin with. It’s a great way to know more about the ropes and the insides of any organisation.

Hope this helped. Lots of luck!
